Has your child worked hard raising or helping in the orchard or vegetable garden this summer? They should consider entering vegetables into the upcoming Youth Vegetable Competition! Youth ages 5-18 can submit vegetable to be judged. Cash prizes will be given for class winners and show champions. A big things to Ag South Farm Credit for sponsoring this show. Youth can submit entries into the following competitions:
- Best Vegetable Plate (3 of a kind)
- Best Fruit Plate (3 of a kind)
- Largest Vegetable (by size)
- Largest Fruit (by size)
- Largest Vegetable (by weight)
- Largest Fruit (by weight)
Show Rules:
- Entries may be submitted by youth ages 5-18. Youth DO NOT have to be enrolled as a member of 4-H to participate. This show is open to any Yancey County youth participant.
- Entries will be received from 7:30 -9 a.m. on the Day of the Competition. Judging will take place beginning at 9 a.m.
- Entries will be exhibited until 11:30 a.m. Youth should plan to pick up entries 11:30-Noon. Any entry not picked up by Noon may be discarded.
- Ribbons, Certificates, Premiums or Awards should be picked up on on the day of the show if possible. If not possible, youth may pick up their awards/premiums at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Yancey County Center within 2 weeks of the show. Awards, certificates, ribbons and/or premiums not picked up within 2 weeks of the conclusion of the show may be forfeited, and donated to the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County 4-H & Youth Development Program.
- Youth participants must have grown or assisted in growing the fruit(s) and/or vegetable(s) to enter them in the competition. Judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry suspected of not meeting the “youth grown or assisted in growing” requirement (i.e. suspected store bought fruit or vegetables).
- Youth may enter 1 entry into each class. Classes will be distinguished by fruit/vegetable classification (small fruit, large fruit, brassica, cucurbit, leafy vegetable, best herb, etc.). Each class should contain at least 3 entries. Any class that does not include at least 3 entries may be judged in the “miscellaneous class” at the judges’ discretion. The miscellaneous class can contain multiple entries per participant should there be multiple classes omitted due to not receiving enough entries.
- Individual youth participants may win or place top 3 in more than 1 class.
- For best vegetable or best fruit competitions, each entry should include three of each vegetable or fruit placed on a paper plate. Plates will be provided for youth submitting entries. Entries will be judged based on uniformity and quality (harvested at desired maturity, best appearance, free of blemish, free of dirt, etc.). Judges DO NOT have to award 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in every class for best vegetable or best fruit 3 of a kind if the entries are not judged to be of placement quality.
- For largest fruit or vegetable by size, the judges will award up to 3 placings per class.
- Champion and Champion Reserve will be awarded for the following competitions unless they include no entries.

- Best Fruit Plate (3 of a kind)
- Largest Vegetable (by size)
- Largest Fruit (by size)
- Largest Vegetable (by weight)
- Largest Fruit (by weight)
11. Premium Cash Prizes will be awarded for winners in this competition. The amount of premium for Class placement, Champion, and Reserve Champion will be dependent upon the total amount of sponsorship received and the number of entries.
N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County reserves the right to initiate policy or rule(s) to address any circumstance arising not addressed by these rules. This may be done in collaboration with the show judges.
