Peanut pod blasting is an important tool for determining optimum peanut maturity, helping growers maximize yield and market grade. In general, each day peanuts are dug before optimal maturity results in approximately a 1% yield loss.

Additionally, keeping plants healthy heading into digging is important for flexibility in harvest timing and maximizing yield potential. Sclerotinia blight risk is currently high in Clinton for peanuts with closed canopies, and the last effective spray date for leaf spot was August 17.

Peanuts with a high level of defoliation from leaf spot (greater than 40%) at optimum maturity can lose yield potential more rapidly than peanuts with little to no defoliation. Therefore, scout fields to determine if disease may be present and remain proactive with spray programs to help maintain healthy plants as peanuts approach maturity.
