SCOTLAND COUNTY 4-H MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

Here is a list of benefits reported by parents and campers who attended a 4-H Residential Camp
4-H is delivered by Cooperative Extension across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. Youth, ages 5-18 complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture and citizenship, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles.

4-H RESIDENTIAL CAMP

Youth, ages 8-14 embark on a six-day overnight excursion to participate in co-ed activity groups according to age and request, and activity groups stay together throughout the day, participating in various camp activities and sharing mealtimes. Camp is $650.00 per child which includes transportation, meals, lodging, insurance, camp t-shirt, and $15 camp store money. Donations to Scotland County 4-H are used to reduce the fee to $350 per child, however, this cost can be challenging to many families in Scotland County. A payment plan is in place to assist with this cost.

4-H DELIVERY METHODS

4-H uses a variety of methods and locations for reaching youth with opportunities that help them grow and develop in positive ways including:
  • Organized Clubs
  • In-School Enrichment Programs
  • Residential/Overnight Camps
  • After-school Programs
  • Special Interest Classes or Day Camps

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Children are at less risk at camp where they have a sense of community, develop intergenerational relationships, and learn through first-hand experiences.

ACCEPTING DIFFERENCES

4-H values people. The moments that result in the camp experience repeatedly express the value of people. We demonstrate that value through respect, honesty, caring, and sharing. Through the camp experience, young people learn to understand the strength of mankind. They also develop an appreciation for the qualities required to protect the fragile relationships needed to protect these relationships.

LEADERSHIP

Trained, caring adult role models help children feel loved, capable, and included. Camp helps children grow by providing a supervised, positive environment that has safety as a primary commitment.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

For years, campers’ parents have reported that when their children return home from camp they are more caring, understand the importance of giving, are more equipped to stand up for what they know is right, and are willing to be more responsible. These are the qualities that achieve the 4-H mission of developing healthy productive citizens will help

SELF ESTEEM

Camp provides children with a community of caring adults, who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value. All of the outcomes-self-identity, self-worth, self-
esteem, leadership, and self-respect – build personal competencies.

DECISION-MAKING SKILLS

4-H camping teaches youth to make their own decisions, solve problems, and manage their resources without the help of family. Through involvement in the 4-H camping program, youth gain a better appreciation of family members by learning how to become more responsible. Campers and parents of campers also learn to better appreciate each other.

INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS

Camp prepares youth for life transitions, reinforces life lessons learned at home, and prepares youth for independent living. It was stated that “parents specifically reported increases in developmental outcomes like resilience, cooperation, communication, critical thinking, and decision-making – skills closely mapped to ’21st Century Skills’ that employers have identified as important for future workforce success.”

CITIZENSHIP

4-H values a sense of contribution. The benefits of our work are both immediate and slow to emerge. Most significantly, although the experience itself is often fleeting, our impact on the human spirit lasts a lifetime. Children who attend camp develop connections with the world.
